How to bring a new dog to your dog at home - Dog Training with Americas Canine Educator
So you got a new dog your neighbor got a dog your spouse got a dog your brother your sister your aunt your uncle whatever maybe adopted puppy older younger doesn't matter there's a couple really important things that you need to know when you're introducing new dogs into the pack and I'm gonna go over those things right now for you welcome to the coolest dog training channel on YouTube Tom Davis America's canine educator here if you're new here thank you so much for following along we are a dog training community that uplifts helps each other out engages with each other in the comments below on all the videos that we do subscribe and leave a comment below to introduce yourself thank you so much for joining us and if you've been subscribed of course from the bottom of my heart thank you so much for being a part of this and also communicating and being part of the community in the comments below as well it's really cool to wake up and see all you guys interacting with each other and of course helping each other for the benefit of the dog. So today I'm gonna do an introduction on how to introduce another dog into your pack and we got dumped down with snow see so if you're a little unsure and you want to do things right this video is for you but first I think the plows here which means I gotta go move my truck do you want to come he's not ready it's not ready for me like everything we do in this channel these things are going to be very generalized so what that means is is this is gonna apply for almost all of you out there but you're gonna have a couple cases where this isn't going to apply but for the majority of you this is what you're gonna want to do first thing I would do is go throughout your house pick everything of value up that means toys bones maybe even food maybe even water anything of value to the dog that currently lives there should probably come up and out of sight the reason being is when we do get to the last step of actually bringing the dog in we don't want anything out that the dogs could potentially fight over or protect or what we call resource guard first thing I'm going to tell you guys before we finish this videos do not let the new dog into the house yet make sure you follow these instructions to do it properly before you introduce them inside the house. When you get another dog and throw it into your house it creates so many different issues and you're gonna set the dogs up for failure and ultimately starting them off on the wrong foot if you're introducing a roommates dog a neighbor's dog a friend's dog whatever it is if you can get somebody to do this with you because it's going to be a lot easier with two people than it is with one person so text that person and say hey I need you to come over I'll give you some beer I'll give you some coffee or whatever it is that you do and do to people if you possibly can because it's gonna make your life a lot easier and less stressful so if you're really unsure of the dog and you've had issues in the past I would highly suggest meeting completely off-site going somewhere that nobody can claim is a really safe idea if you have a dog that's usually really good and is dandy with pretty much everybody you still want to meet in a neutral area because it's gonna make things go a lot smoother so even going down the road in your own neighborhood is something that I would say would be a safer bet than just bringing them onto your property again in my mind guys I'm trying to help you all out not just the puppies not just the new shelter dogs or the adopted dogs I this is going to be steps for you guys to ultimately be six we'll across the board in any situation so take this with a grain of salt and customize it to what you guys think is really going to be beneficial.

So what I would do is once you guys get to your sites you guys meet up as humans and you walked next to each other so what you'll do is you're literally just not let the dogs meet at all not go nose-to-nose even if they want to they're gonna go hey who are you and that's totally natural and that's totally okay but again when you're meeting for a long time relationship you want to you want to make things go as smooth as possible during this process you guys are basically meeting as humans you want to illuminate to the dogs that you guys are just going to meet each other and then go in for a walk and they're along for the ride that's the whole environment that you want to create with these two dogs who don't know each other if you get a dog that's interested that's totally great but take your time with this if you want to do this the right way take your time meet with each other walk forward once you guys meet and you're walking forward keep one dog on one side of you and the other dog and the other side of that other person and you're walking forward and then you guys will be able to tell if it's going to go great if it's going to go bad pretty much right off the bat but it keeps it safe and it keeps it so you guys can still be civil with each other as far as the dogs relationship goes because they didn't go after each other they didn't have a little squall they they're still neutral whether they like it or not they're neutral and you guys will ultimately be able to side safely if it's a good idea for them to meet or not.
How to Put WEIGHT on a DOG ⬆️ 5 HEALTHY Tips?
After you've walked quite a bit what I then suggest have one person go in front of the other person and just walk so one person is behind one person is in front and trying to just keep them in a nice even heel all the way around and you guys can take your time with that you could do it for five minutes you can do it for ten then what you do altum Utley is you just switch positions so the dog that was in the front is now in the back so you're walking with one dog on the left side moving forward and then your friend or whatever is behind you with the other dog what this does intermittently switching them back and forth is it allows them to get used to each other by smells that's how dogs first meet that's why they sniff each others butts like we're does is because that's how they're trying to get used to each other that's how they're trying to introduce each other through smells so what this does very safely and controlled is it's introducing them through smells and scents why you guys are intermittently switching back and forth so if the dogs are pulling and going after each other to play you guys need to make a decision to say okay this looks great let's let them play or if they're still air scenting and trying to get to know the dog and a little bit curious but not overly curious continue on your walk until things are just just really relaxed then after you guys have gone on that nice walk with each other switching positions then what you can do is you can put them both inside so they're walking next to each other again you guys need to dictate how this is gonna go.
19 Things That Make Dogs Happy (According To Science)
If you feel like they're gonna be super playful and they're just ready to play bow and they're just really excited you guys make that decision to say okay great this is gonna be a good decision let's let them play or if they're still air scenting and a little nervous and a little skeptical just continue to build the relationship through you guys being leaders that's really what we're doing here is it's two individuals that are in control that are really setting the tone for hey I'm in charge it doesn't matter who or who or what's around you have to listen to me or it doesn't matter because I'm in charge and you're confident with me making decisions for you so we're just going to go on a walk it doesn't matter if there's a dog or not and then as you guys do that the dogs will become more secure with each other they'll feel like okay we're helping each other picture it like this a lot of times bigger companies will say hey none of you guys really know each other HR doesn't know maintenance and maintenance doesn't know finance let's all go build a house for fundraising purposes and at the end of it everybody's mingling and everybody knows each other and you guys work better together with a single goal in mind which is to build a house you guys are going out basically walking the dogs that's your house and what it does is it accomplishes a nice walk but it really safely gets that gets the dog to know each other on a very slow more natural way.
Why Is My Dog Struggling To Poop? | Constipation In Dogs | Veterinarian Explains
What happens a lot of times is I've seen relationships that could go really well fail because people are just boom they just let them go especially when they're on their own property so that's the first couple steps is just introduce this way off the property you guys dictate how it goes what it looks like what kind of things that they're doing to tell you that they're happier or not then what you can do is start moving back towards your property this is where you want to be careful if you have a dog that could potentially be protective make sure when you go home mom or dad that you are not overly petting your dog or really talking to your dog because then this will send off red flags just be super super calm super neutral and just walk onto the prop stay in the yard for a little bit if you don't have a yard stay in the sidewalk go on your property and just hang out for a little bit if you don't have a sidewalk or a yard go on your front steps and just chill out for a little bit and start integrating the property change with the dogs together dogs or dogs we have to remember they're animals so if you're gonna see any type of protectiveness or boundary control if you will then you're gonna see it when you get closer to the property so just make sure that you're not pre setting the dog up for failure.
By saying it's okay Fido it's okay if I know it's okay we're home we're home we're home that's gonna just red flag the dog because they're gonna say wait a minute why are you acting different oh we're home wait why should I act differently why are you acting differently that sets the dog up for failure big time so don't do that when you get home on your property take your time don't worry about rushing things inside just take your time hang out outside and just dictate whether or not okay this is gonna go good this is gonna bad they're happy they don't care about each other then you guys can enter the property I could talked about in the beginning of the video make sure everything valuable is up food bowls water bowls toys tugs anything of value to the dog that lives there needs to come up because the new dogs about to come in and play with all these potential things so you need to make sure that anything that the dog can resource guard or get upset about not sharing pull those up put them on the fridge put them in a cover to make sure that they're out of the way that'll be something that can trigger a potential dog that can become protective keep the leashes on but it's important not to put pressure on the leashes in not needed situation so don't walk around putting pressure and your leash worried about your dog doing something just have them on just in case and follow them around if you're really nervous but having them on just in case you can pull them away if anything gets ugly really quick.
